Home Management House Reunion
Alumnae who lived in the college’s home management houses while earning their degrees in home economics are invited to an all-day reunion October 17. The home management houses, part of the curriculum from 1924 to 1971, were “learning laboratories” in which students applied theories learned in the classroom. Reunion participants will reconnect with friends and classmates, take in a historical retrospective of the houses, and, optionally, attend the college’s afternoon “Learning for Living sessions (see below). The Reunion Committee is collecting historical documents such as photos, papers, and budgets for display. To submit materials or for more reunion information, contact Ami Berger at 612-625-7060 or aberger@che.umn.edu.

Learning For Living 2003: Sustaining Family
How do the foods we eat, the spaces and objects around us, and the ways we interact and live together contribute to our sense of family? Join us from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. October 17 for a new Learning for Living series exploring family sustainability with a human ecological twist. Here is a sneak peek at three of the four sessions:

Caves to Kitchens to Outer Space: Food Design for Changing Times
Presenter: Ted LaBuza, professor of food science and nutrition
From fire, canning, and frozen foods, to military MREs, microwaveable one-dish meals, and astronaut cuisine, this session explores the development of food design and processing over time, inspired by war, the changing needs of families and communities, and advances in technology.

Once Upon an Heirloom
Presenter: Lindsay Shen, director of The Goldstein Museum of Design
Like a favorite photograph, the objects we treasure have stories to tell. This session offers practical advice on how to preserve and share family treasures, along with their stories and traditions, so they can be passed on and enjoyed for generations to come.

Family Connections in a Hurry-Up World
Presenter: Amanda Richards ’91, and Ph.D. candidate, family social science
What can we do to sustain family connections in a fast-paced world? Explore the changing definition and experience of family while learning how to reclaim family time and strengthen family ties.
