Form\Inform,” which runs September 28, 2003 to January 4, 2004, is an innovative juried exhibit in which America’s prominent graphic designers reveal how their design education has shaped their practice. The show also includes the work of some designers who were invited to participate. Each designer has submitted student work and a piece completed as a design professional, along with written statements comparing the works. “Form\Inform” poses questions such as, What is the trajectory from a designer’s education to his or her professional work? What are the forces that shape successful graphic design? How do careers evolve amid changes in design education, professional practice, imaging technology, and approach to craft?
This exhibit is curated by Steven McCarthy, associate professor in the Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel, and curator of graphic design for The Goldstein. The exhibit has been juried by Kali Nikitas, associate professor and design program chair, Minneapolis College of Art and Design; Steven Sikora, partner and creative director in the Minneapolis firm Design Guys; and Tim Larsen, president of Larsen Design + Interactive, Minneapolis and San Jose, Calif.
“Art and Artifact: Sweaters by Designer Solveig Hisdal” will open at The Goldstein January 25 and run through March 28. For Norwegian knitwear designer Solveig Hisdal, museum collections are an endless source of inspiration. Fascinated by textile patterns and combinations of materials in old folk costumes, Hisdal expresses her personal vision of tradition in richly colored and patterned sweaters. She is the principal designer for Oleana A/S, a small knitting mill near Bergen, Norway, whose products enjoy widespread popularity throughout the United States.
