Friends honor legacy of College of Human Ecology
About 700 people turned out for events on April 7 to celebrate the legacy of the College of Human Ecology. At an afternoon storytelling event and an evening gala, CHE alumni and friends shared memories, reflected on the values of CHE, and conveyed their hopes for the future as academic units within the college prepare to join new colleges on July 1. Senior exhibition begins April 23 "Last Call: Give Us a Shot!," the annual spring exhibition by seniors in the Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel, will open April 23 in the Goldstein Museum of Design. An additional exhibition display window will be located at Marshall Field's on 7th Street in downtown Minneapolis. A closing reception will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on May 10.
Exhibit to feature student design work The final CHE college awards for faculty, staff, students, and alumni will be presented at a luncheon in the North Star Ballroom in the St. Paul Student Center on April 28. Register to attend by April 14.
Family Policy Forum addresses kids in court A Family Policy Forum titled "Kids in Court: Deal or No Deal" takes place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on April 18 in Room 2-206 of the Carlson School of Management. When a child is in a neglectful and/or abusive family situation, many people and agencies - including the courts - can become involved in that child's life, and judges are required to make decisions that are in the best interests of the child. Hennepin County District Judge Denise Reilly will present, with a response by Jean Gerval, Senior Attorney, University of Minnesota Law School. The event is presented by the University of Minnesota's Family Policy Minor and the Children, Youth and Family Consortium. Attendees are invited to bring a lunch.
CitySongs to hold benefit concert Twin Cities gospel treasure Robert "Eddie" Robinson and other guest musicians will perform a benefit concert for CitySongs at 7:15 p.m. on April 20, at the First Universalist Church of Minneapolis. Tickets are available at http://www.ticketweb.com.
Bill Doherty, FSoS, discussed an effort by Edina families to designate days to "unplug" from technology to create opportunities for families to bond personally in a March 14 article in the Star-Tribune. Also, he was quoted in an April 9 article in the Toledo Blade about the toll that accelerating time demands has taken on quality of life.
Jodi Dworkin, FSoS, was interviewed March 6 for a CNN story about her online course for parents of college students.
Caren Martin and Denise Guerin, DHA, were mentioned in an Interior Design magazine article on March 22 announcing the release of the 2005 Edition of the Interior Design Profession's Body of Knowledge of which they developed the original version.
Patricia Olson, FSoS, was interviewed March 31 for a Fox 9 story on holds placed on credit cards after authorizations at the gas pump.
Selected faculty highlights
Lisa Albrecht , SSW, presented a keynote address and workshop at St. Stephen's Church on March 10 as part of a weekend parish mission about "Ending Poverty."
A team leaded by Mauricio Arango , DHA, was awarded the 2006 Public Art Affairs Commission from Forecast Public Artworks. The piece will be a sound, text, and light permanent public art project to be placed on the University Avenue corridor between Saint Paul and Minneapolis and will be completed in spring 2007.
Jeffrey Edleson , SSW, has published a chapter in a new book entitled "Children Exposed to Violence" from Brookes Publishing Co.
Tasoulla Hadjiyanni , DHA, was a panelist in the Mayor's Summit organized by the Weisman Art Museum in conjunction with their HOME House Project. Four mayors, including St Paul's and Minneapolis' Mayors were invited to share ideas about the future of affordable housing.
Seung-Eun Lee , DHA, has an invited book chapter in a book edited by K. S. Sunder titled Mass Customization: Concepts and Applications.
Mark Umbreit , SSW, has been selected as the 2006 University of Minnesota Outstanding Community Service Awardee. This award recognizes significant contributions to community service and public engagement on behalf of the University of Minnesota.
SSW Director Jean Quam has won the University's Mullen, Spector, Truax Women's Leadership Award, for creative and sustained efforts to advance women of every level and status at the University. The award will be presented on April 26th at the 2006 "Celebrating University Women" Awards Celebration from 2:30-4:30 in the McNamara Alumni Center.
Mary Lovinelli Buescher, a graduate student in DHA, was one of 12 winners in the 42nd Pillsbury Bake-Off contest held last month in Orlando, Fla. Buescher's recipe for pineapple-black bean enchiladas was among 100 chosen for final competition among tens of thousands of entries in this year's Bake-Off.
