College restructuring task forces schedule public forums
The task forces responsible for recommending structures for the new design and education colleges to be created from academic units within the College of Human Ecology and other colleges will hold task forces to receive public input on their tentative recommendations. The open public forums for the task force working on college design related to the College of Human Ecology and the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture have been rescheduled and will be held:

Academic task forces working on college design related to the combination of the College of Education and Human Development, General College, and the Family Social Science and School of Social Work units of the College of Human Ecology will host two public forums for the CHE/CEHD communities to present their proposed recommendations for the direction and vision of the new integrated college and to prepare community members to participate in the 30-day public comment period on the draft report. The sessions are open to the public; the task forces especially encourage the participation of members of the General College, the College of Education and Human Development, and the College of Human Ecology. Holiday gifts from the Dairy Store
The dairy store in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition is offering special gift boxes in three different sizes for the holiday season. All of the items sold are made fresh on the Twin Cities campus in St. Paul. The most popular items include Nuworld spread made from the University's white blue cheese, Gouda cheese, aged cheddar, and ice cream. Gift certificates, available in $5 and $10 increments, also are available.
The store is located in Room 166 of the Andrew Boss Lab of Meat Science, 1354 Eckles Avenue, and is open on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. The deadline for ordering a holiday gift box is Wednesday, December 21. CitySongs to hold winter concert
CitySongs, a creative arts-based individual and community youth development program for fourth through eighth graders, will host its 14th Annual Winter Concert "Minds to Think, Voices to Serve, Hearts to Love" at 4:30 p.m. on December 11. The event will take place in the University of St. Thomas Brady Hall near the intersection of Grand and Cretin Avenues in St. Paul. It's an evening of holiday excitement and magical music.
Everyone is invited to this family-friendly concert, "Minds to Think, Voices to Serve, Hearts to Love." Admission is free and refreshments will be served after the show. For more information, go to http://citysongs.umn.edu .
In memoriam
Homa Amir-Fazli, DHA associate professor emeritus, passed away on Oct. 22. Memorial services were held Saturday, Nov. 19, Cards for the family and/or contributions to a scholarship fund for clothing design students may be sent to DHA. Pauline Boss, FSoS professor emeritus, was interviewed in the Dec. 5 issue of Time about the difficulty of dealing with ambiguous loss of loved ones during the holiday season.
James Boyd-Brent, DHA, was mentioned in the Star Tribune on Nov. 14 and his etching of the Twin Cities purchased by Chris Coleman, St. Paul mayor-elect, as a gift for Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.
Marilyn DeLong, CHE associate dean and DHA faculty, was mentioned in the Asian American Press, on Oct. 9 discussing the opening of Dr. Geum's exhibit "Mind Over Matter, Body Under Design" that runs through Jan. 8, at the Goldstein Museum of Design.
Regents Professor Joanne Eicher, DHA, was mentioned in the Star Tribune on Nov. 14 with Lisa Ling, with whom she co-authored her new book. Lisa Ling will discuss the book on May 18 in the National Geographic Live Speaker Series at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis.
Denise Guerin, DHA, was quoted in the Pioneer Press on Nov. 21 discussing influences such as HGTV's plethora of design shows which in turn is attracting more students to design programs.
Len Marquart, FScN, was quoted in the University of Minnesota Moment on Oct. 28 discussing the growing body of evidence suggesting that people should eat more whole wheat, oats and other unrefined grains.
Marla Reicks, FScN, was quoted in Minnesota Womens Press on Nov. 7 discussing her confirmation that cold-weather food cravings have a physiological source.
Susan Wells, Gamble-Skogmo Chair in Child Welfare & Youth Policy, was quoted in the Nov. 6 Mankato Free Press discussing the delicate balance social workers strike as they focus on keeping families together while keeping kids safe.
Becky Yust, DHA, was quoted in UMN News on Nov. 2 reporting for the CALA/CHE College Design Task Force discussing various features of the new college such as its mission, strengths, and areas of investment, as well as its actual name and location.
Selected faculty and staff highlights
Marilyn DeLong, DHA professor and CHE associate dean, received the Prentice Hall Lecture Award for her lecture on “Design: Currency for Cultural Exchange” presented at International Textiles & Apparel Association Conference.
Ed Taylor, SSW, has had his book Atlas of Bipolar Disorders published by Taylor & Francis. Dr. Taylor is the only social worker to be published in this series of books on medical and psychiatric subjects. The book is a visual representation of information about bipolar disorders for patients, families, clinicians, social workers, and healthcare workers.
SSW faculty members Terry Lum, Liz Lightfoot, and Rosalee Kane, presented papers at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando FL on November 17-22.
Celi Dean, FSoS, was interviewed in the Star Tribune on Nov. 18 regarding her life, her accomplishment, and her recently acquired title of Miss Black USA.
DHA students Kelly Gage, Jean McElvain and Megan Wannarka were mentioned in an Oct. 18 UMN News that discusses the fashion design and textile art projects collaborated upon with 16 students from Seoul, Korea who visited the Twin Cities in early October.
Sarah French, a senior in clothing design, and Rebecca VanAmber, '05 textile design alumnna, received two of the three undergraduate design awards granted in the recent design competition of the International Textiles & Apparel Association in Washington, D.C. Sarah won the award for Best Solution to a Structuring Problem with a modern business jacket inspired by a man’s frock coat and woman’s corset from the 18th century. Rebecca's award was for Excellence in Marketable Textile Design for an environmentally conscious dyeing technique.
