The St. Paul Campus Career Center held a grand opening celebration Feb. 1-2 that included an open house and a ribbon-cutting by President Bruininks and students from the colleges of Human Ecology, Natural Resources, and Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences.

Senior Fashion Show
Clothing design seniors showcase their designs at "Stylus," the 38th annual Senior Fashion Show, on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Rarig Center, U of M West Bank. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m., followed by a reception. Tickets may be purchased at the St. Paul Student Center ($10 advance, $15 at the door). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. More information


Album covers on display at The Goldstein
“Hip Art That’s Square” is on exhibit at The Goldstein through April 3. The exhibition, curated by Steven McCarthy, is a survey of over 300 LP album covers from the collection of Richard Shelton. It examines the relationships between popular music and the graphic art of its packaging and features albums which span half of the twentieth century and most musical genres. More information about the exhibit 

 

Career readiness events
Upcoming CHE Alumni Society career readiness events for students include a Feb. 8 tour to Medical Weight Management Center with nutrition alumna, Karen Holtmeier and the Student Organization of Nutrition and Dietetics (SOND), and a March 2 interior design portfolio event. FScN Advisory Council meeting on Feb. 10
The FScN Advisory Council annual meeting is on Thursday, Feb. 10 in 42 Continuing Education and Conference Center (formerly Earle Brown). The program will focus on the science of healthy foods, with presentations by Marla Reicks, Dan Gallaher, Zata Vickers, and Ted Labuza, followed by discussion with advisory council members.   • Paul Rosenblatt, FSoS, was on WCCO radio on Feb. 2 discussing his new study on couples relationships when one of the partners’ parent/s die. He also was on the Don Shelby Show on WCCO radio Jan. 13 talking about his research on cabin fever. 
  • Carrie Peterson, FScN, is featured in a UMNnews story about what football players might (and should) eat before the big Super Bowl game.
  • Dee Ginthner and Caren Martin, DHA, are quoted in a UMNnews story on confronting Seasonal Affective Disorder.
  • Dan Gallaher, FScN, is quoted in the Jan. 25 issue of the Minnesota Daily in a story about a study that will examine the effects of vitamin E on Alzheimer’s sufferers. He also was was on KSTP-5 News Jan. 13 discussing what foods to eat to sustain yourself in the cold weather.
  • Jean Bauer, FSoS, is in the Jan. 21 issue of the Star Tribune discussing affordable child care options.
  • Marlene Stum, FSoS, is quoted in the Feb. issue of Money magazine (pg. 47) in an article about how people can plan for the distribution of personal possessions after death.
  • Joanne Slavin, FScN, was interviewed for the Jan. 15 issue of the Star Tribune and on Fox 9 News Jan. 13 discussing what foods to eat to sustain yourself in the cold weather.
  • Al Levine, FScN, was on WCCO radio Jan. 11 explaining the USDA’s new dietary guidelines.

Selected faculty highlights

  • Shirley Baugher has been named chair-elect of the Board on Human Sciences, the the premier advocacy group for academic programs in the human sciences. She will take over as chair in November 2006 and serve for two years.
  • Denise Guerin, DHA, has been named a UM Senior Teaching Fellow as part of a highly selective initiative that brings together eight fellows from the Twin Cities campus that have distinguished themselves in the areas of teaching, research, and campus leadership.
  • Bill Angell, DHA, has been elected to a two-year term as Vice-President of the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists.
  • Intaglio prints by James Boyd-Brent, DHA, are included in an exhibition at the 9th Street Entry Gallery in the Rossmor building, 500 North Robert Street, St. Paul. The show runs until Feb. 18.
  • Bill Doherty, FSoS, has received a three-year grant from the McKnight Foundation to fund his Community Engaged Parent Education Project.
  • Mike Baizerman, SSW, went to Amman, Jordan, to work with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) on youth civic engagement issues. Workshops and trainings were conducted on how to carry out youth civic engagement under often especially difficult conditions.

DHA Ph.D. candidates receive funding
Patricia Salmi received the 2004 Mabelle Wilhelmina Memorial Scholarship of the American Society of Interior Designers Educational Foundation for her research on wayfinding in public spaces for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Mihuyn Kang, received the 2004 Irene Winifred Eno Grant from the foundation for “The Analysis of an Environmentally Sustainable Interior Design Practice.”
