Friends of CHE visited the Goldstein on Jan. 29 to celebrate the opening of the "Celebrate! The College of Human Ecology" exhibition.

"Celebrate! The College of Human Ecology" exhibition opens in Goldstein
"Celebrate! The College of Human Ecology," an exhibition celebrating the teaching/learning, research/discovery, and outreach/engagement scholarship of CHE runs through April 9 in the Goldstein Museum of Design. Current projects will be featured in relationship to the five college initiatives: cultural awareness and competence, design and technology, development across the lifespan, economic and social well-being, and healthy life choices.

Senior fashion show set for Feb. 11
The senior fashion show titled "The F Word...Expect Something Different" will be Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4:30 and 8 p.m. in Rarig Center on the University's West Bank. The show includes designs by 16 senior clothing design students, plus previews of the sophomore and junior clothing design classes. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and are available at the St. Paul Student Center.

CHE Alumni Society offering career tours
The CHE Alumni Society is sponsoring a variety of career-related activities for both undergraduate and graduate students to give them an opportunity to make professional connections, explore career and internship options and see theory in practice. More than a dozen tours have been scheduled to sites related to graphic, clothing, and interior design; retail merchandising, family social science, social work, food science and nutrition, and housing studies. CHE Student Board shares from the heart for Valentine's Day
The CHE Student Board will show appreciation to fellow students in the McNeal Hall Atrium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Valentine's Day by distributing cookies, hot cocoa and other treats.

Nominations open for 2006 CHE Honors and Awards
The CHE Honors & Awards Committee announces the opening of nominations for the 2006 Collegiate Awards. The nomination deadline is 4 p.m. on Monday, March 6. A maximum of two letters of recommendation are requested for any award. The annual honors and awards luncheon will be held Friday, April 28 at 11:30 am in the Ballroom of the Saint Paul Student Center. Applications being accepted for Buckman Fellowship
The Buckman Fellowship program is a unique opportunity for faculty, staff, graduate students, and alumni to learn about the world of fundraising. Buckman Fellows are chosen on the basis of their commitment to a specific philanthropy project and awarded a $1,000 stipend. The fellowship is made possible by the Mertie W. Buckman Endowed Fund for Leadership in Philanthropy, established in 2002. Mrs. Willigar Buckman, a dedicated philanthropist and former CHE faculty member. The application deadline is March 2006.   • Bill Doherty, FSoS, talked about family interaction related to making meals from scratch in a WCCO-TV story on Jan. 24.
  • Ted Labuza, FScN, was quoted in an article in the online publication The Register about a previous quote he had made to Wired about the edibility of canned food stored for long periods of time.
  • Al Levine, FScN, addressed appropriate uses of the weight reduction drug Xenical in a Jan. 23 story on KARE 11 TV.
  • Len Marquart, FScN, recommended consumption of whole grains as part of a balanced diet in an article "The Carb Lover's Diet" in Shape magazine.
  • Ed Taylor, SSW, was featured Jan. 28 on "The Stan Turner Show" on radio station WMGT-AM discussing the topic of "children who kill their parents."
Selected faculty highlights

  • Marilyn Bruin, DHA, and Becky Yust, head of DHA, are coauthors of chapters in the new textbook Introduction to Housing, published by the Housing Education and Research Association.
  • A paper by Sauman Chu, DHA, Mauricio Arango, DHA, and Charles Yust, CALA, entitled "A Case Study: Creating and Designing a Bilingual Resource Website for Somali Immigrants" has been accepted as a chapter in the book Advances in Universal Web Design and Evaluation: Research, Trends and Opportunities to be published by Idea Groups in 2006.
  • Denise Guerin, Caren Martin, and Stephanie Zollinger of DHA presented papers at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities to be held in Oahu, Hawaii, in January.
  • Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, DHA, and Cathy Solheim, FSoS, have been named as recipients of the University's President's Faculty Multicultural Research Award. The award supports research for two years and is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for System Administration and the Office for Multicultural and Academic Affairs.
  • DHA faculty members Sherri Gahring, Kim Johnson, Seung-Eun Lee and graduate student Seahee Lee are part of the Retail Analysis and Development Program Team that received the Dean and Directors Distinguished Team award of the University of Minnesota Extension Service. Team members initiated a two-track program to teach business owners and communities how to analyze purchasing patterns and develop strategies to survive and grow.
  • Jan Hogan, CHE interim dean and FSoS faculty, has been given the National Bachtel Collegiate Advisor Award by the Phi Upsilon Omicron Education Foundation.
  • Ann Kranz, Jennifer Witt, Kevin Bullock and Jeffrey Edleson, SSW, presented a new online directory and meeting calendar for use by the Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against Women Technical Assistance Providers. The presentation was at a national meeting in Washington DC on January 19th.
  • Allen Levine, head of FScN, recently presented, "The Animal Model in Food Intake Regulation" at the 2005 Food Summit in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The conference was attended by a diverse group of international researchers who were coming together to focus on the interactions between food and the human response system.
  • Steven McCarthy, DHA, presented a paper "Designer-authored Histories: Graphic Design at the Goldstein Museum of Design," at the international conference New Views: Repositioning Graphic Design History held at the London College of Communication. He also moderated the panel Form/Formulate: New Critical Theories in Design.
  • Esther Wattenberg, SSW, provided invited commentaries on two papers presented at an expert symposium, "Emerging Issues in Paternity Establishment," in Washington, DC, on Jan. 25th.
  • Sheryl Wilson, Annie Roberts, and Mark Umbreit of the Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking conducted a two-day conference on restorative justice for the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and other county agencies on Jan. 11 and 12.
  • Susan Wells, SSW, presented on racial disparities in child welfare services at the 10th annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research held in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, a racial disparities report she worked on for the Minnesota Department of Human Services has recently been published.

  • Betsy Raguse, DHA, has been accepted to the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA) City Arts program. The program involves an exploration of the Twin Cities art scene while focusing on particular social issues and strategies for social change.

  • Maureen O'Dougherty, Ph.D., research associate, has joined Professor Mindy Kurzer's nutrition research team in Food Science and Nutrition. Dr. O'Dougherty was previously a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota. She will be responsible for managing the aerobic exercise training intervention research study.

  • Sabrina Peterson, R.D., Ph.D., has accepted an assistant professor position in Food Science and Nutrition. Dr. Peterson received her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Washington in Seattle. She completed her PhD work in the area of food and cancer, particularly related to cruciferous and apiaceous plants.
