College deadlines

 Applications for P/A Mini-Leaves to occur in spring 2006 are due to department heads on February 15. Completed performance appraisals for CS/BU and non-instructional P/A staff are due Monday, February 28. 

Career Center grand opening
 The St. Paul Campus Career Center (SPCCC) grand opening celebration will be held Feb. 1 and 2 in 198 McNeal. SPCCC's goal is to have 1,000 visitors (students, staff, faculty, and employers) over the two days; a prize drawing will be held for students. Celebration hours are 10-5 on Tuesday, Feb. 1 (program at 4 p.m. with remarks from President Bruininks and Jerry Rinehart) and 10-3 on Wed., Feb. 2.

World in Minnesota event
 The next event in the series, the World in Minnesota: Diverse Families, Shared Dreams, is scheduled for April 28 and will focus on the Hmong community. Plans are in the works; watch for details or contact Aysem Karahan, akarahan@che.umn.edu.

Attend the Legislative Briefing
 The CHE community is invited to attend the U's Legislative Briefing on January 27, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. (includes light dinner buffet) at McNamara Alumni Center. Learn how to be an advocate for the U of M at the capitol and in your community. Join President Robert Bruininks for an insider’s look at the University’s 2006-07 biennial budget request to the Minnesota state legislature. RSVP now or call 612-625-9174.

CASCW receives grant
 The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) Child Welfare Policy Fellows project was awarded one of the University's Council on Public Engagement seed grant awards of $5,000). Funds will be used to test the Policy Fellows concept in a spring forum on adolescent/child welfare issues as a springboard for a yearlong 'conversation.'

Goldstein exhibit opens Jan. 29
 "Hip Art That’s Square" opens at The Goldstein with a reception on January 29 and runs through April 3. The exhibit features more than 300 LP record covers from the exhaustive archive of Minneapolis collector, Richard Shelton, and is curated by Shelton and Goldstein graphic arts curator, Steven McCarthy. It will provide unique visual snapshots of different moments in recent history and includes such enviable and little seen covers as the Beatles’ short-lived Butcher cover for the Yesterday and Today album, Andy Warhol’s Banana cover for The Velvet Underground and Nico, and the John Lennon and Yoko Ono album covers Two Virgins and The Wedding. The opening reception is from 7-9 p.m. More about The Goldstein

  • Dean Shirley Baugher is in the "There" section of January’s Minnesota Monthly. She is featured in a photo with fashion designer Lila Bath and Mexican Consul General Carlos Sada Solana from the first World in Minnesota event which was held last October.
  • Bill Doherty, FSoS, was featured in the Jan. 3 issue of USA Today in a story about one journalist’s New Year’s resolution to go on a unique diet - one that cuts down on his family’s extracurricular activities. 
  • Marilyn DeLong, DHA, was quoted in the Dec. 29 issue of the Sioux Falls, SD Argus Leader about her work with South Dakota State University’s historic costume collection. 
  • Paul Rosenblatt, FSoS, is quoted in a UMN News story about the challenges of sharing a bed. 
  • Pauline Boss, FSoS, was quoted in the Dec. 27 issue of the Star Tribune in a story on how to deal with a horrible year. 
  • Bill Doherty’s book, The Intentional Family, was referenced in the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 30
  • Joanne Slavin, FScN, was on WCCO-TV Dec. 16 talking about the presence of McDonald’s restaurants in hospitals.
  • Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, FScN, was quoted in an editorial in the Madison, WI Capital Times discussing the safety of organic foods. 
  • Al Levine, FScN, was on MPR’s Weekend America program discussing how to eat less during the holidays. He also was quoted in a Dec. 10 Associated Press story on the Northwoods Diet. The story appeared in the New York Times and on KSTP radio. 
  • Marcie Jefferys, SSW, wrote an opinion piece that was published in the Dec. 16 issue of the Pioneer Press. The article addresses Minnesota’s welfare reforms. 
  • Sharon Danes, FSoS, was quoted in the Dec. 7 Minnesota Daily in a story about her new study finding that teens’ financial behavior improved after a short financial course. 
  • Ted Labuza, FScN, was on WCCO-TV Dec. 12 discussing the security of Minnesota’s food supply. 
  • Jean Quam, SSW, was featured in the Dec. 8 Minnesota Daily talking about the new Bachelor of Social Work Child Welfare Consortium. This new program aims to increase the number of trained child welfare service professionals in Greater Minnesota. 
  • Bill Doherty, FSoS, is quoted in the Dec. 5 Star Tribune story, "A timeout on youth sports" about communities that are trying new programs designed to calm down the stressful world of youth sports.

Faculty highlights

  • Dean Shirley Baugher, Associate Dean Catherine Solheim, Jan McCulloch, FSoS, and James Boyd-Brent, DHA, were in Mexico the week of Jan. 10, investigating educational opportunities for collaborative projects and faculty and student exchanges. The trip was a followup to the World in Minnesota event held in October.
  • The following SSW faculty will present at the Society for Social Work Research conference, January 13-16: Laura Abrams, Bill Bradshaw, Marilyn K. Luptak, Jessica Toft (current Ph.D. student), David Hollister, Terry Lum, and Liz Lightfoot. 
  • Jeffrey Edleson, SSW, and Sudha Shetty, director of the Access to Justice Institute at Seattle University School of Law, published the article "Adult Domestic Violence in Cases of International Parental Child Abduction" in the January 2005 issue of the journal Violence Against Women. Edleson and Shetty will also meet in Bangalore, India with representatives of several Indian MSW programs to plan an international social action project to work in an urban slum and a rural village to improve women's and children's access to health care, education technology, and economic development.
  • Elizabeth Parks, FScN, is making a presentation on fatty liver disease for the Obesity Research Seminar Series at the University of Texas on Jan. 18.
  • Joanne Eicher, DHA, was one of three associate editors for the three-volume Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion. The following DHA faculty members wrote essays: Elizabeth Bye, Marilyn DeLong, Joanne Eicher, Karen LaBat, Seung-Eun Lee, Kim Johnson, and Gloria Williams.
  • Marilyn DeLong, DHA, has received a McKnight Special Events Award: $15,000 for Asian Cultural Interchange project to begin Spring 2005.
