 | | Levine named head
Dr. Allen Levine has accepted the position of food science and nutrition department head and professor and will officially begin on September 1, 2004, with an initial three-year term through June of 2007. He will begin transitioning during the month of August. Levine has served as the director of the Minnesota Obesity Center since 1995 and has been the deputy associate chief of staff for research at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for over 15 years. In addition, Levine is a professor in the departments of psychiatry, medicine, and surgery, as well as a member of the graduate faculty in the Departments of Food Science and Nutrition and Neuroscience. | |

Sheila Shawl Events
CHE and the Silent Witness National Initiative present The Sheila Shawl Extravaganza, Wed. June 16, 5-8 p.m. at the Weisman Art Museum. Knitters from around the country have joined together to knit shawls that will be auctioned to raise funds for the Sheila Wellstone Fellowship in the School of Social Work and for the Silent Witness National Initiative. Live, silent, and online auctions will take place. The Goldstein Museum of Design will exhibit select shawls May 23-June 15. As part of the exhibit, special guest Christina Crawford, author of Mommie Dearest and the newly released Daughters of the Inquisition will lecture on May 27.

Bauer named "Best DGS"
Jean Bauer (FSoS) received the University's "Best Director of Graduate Studies Award" on April 22. She was cited for her exceptional leadership in instituting change within the FSoS graduate program, and for devoting her time, energy, and talents to the needs of individual graduate students.

Oliver Williams (SSW) received the Josie Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice Award on May 18.
Detzner moves to General College
Dan Detzner (FSoS) begins his new position as associate dean for academic affairs in General College on May 24, 2004. Friends and colleagues can reach him at his current e-mail address, ddetzner@umn.edu, by telephone at 612-625-5366, or in person in 246 Appleby Hall on the East Bank campus. Detzner began his career in CHE in 1987, he was promoted to professor in 1995, and became associate dean for academic affairs and interim dean (1999-2000) in CHE.
FScN retirement event
FScN invites everyone to a celebration of the careers and service to the the University of Kathy Baldwin, Phil Luttmers, Sita Tatini, and Syb Woutat. The event is on Thursday, May 20, from 3 to 5 p.m., in 23 FScN with refreshments and a short, informal program (in 15 FScN, at 4 p.m.).
Hoke accepts MPR position
Melinda Hoke (Admin) will begin her new position as Director of Major Gifts for Minnesota Public Radio. A farewell event will be held on June 3, 3-5 p.m., at the Campus Club West Wing in Coffman. RSVPs are due to Jill Lietz Christenson, 612-625-3122 by May 27.
McCarthy Barnes leaves for Washington DC internships
Brittny McCarthy Barnes (Admin) will begin two 8-week internships in Washington D.C. on May 24, 2004. Her last day with CHE is May 21. There will be an informal gathering on Thursday, May 20, 2004 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Kitty Club Klub, 315 14th Av. SE., Minneapolis (in Dinkytown). Brittny can be reached at bbarnes@umn.edu .
Kranz selected for leadership program
Ann Kranz (SSW) was selected as one of 25 participants in the 2004-05 President's Emerging Leaders' Program.
Busta PI for homeland security grant
Frank Busta (FScN emeritus) will head the University Of Minnesota's research efforts in the $15 million "Homeland Security Centers Of Excellence" on agro-security. More information.

Erica Lammer, a junior in DHA, was awarded first place in a regional interior design competition. The office design project competition was sponsored by Herman Miller, Inc. She will be sponsored to attend NeoCON, World's Trade Fair 2004, in Chicago this summer.
Tanya Komarova, a student in DHA 8114 Grad Design Studio, has had a digital video she created in class accepted into a juried venue; she also received a small cash award. The video, which depicts transportation in a bleak Minnesota winter, will be on permanent display at one of the Hiawatha Line light rail stations.
Kerry Donnelly, nutrition Ph.D. candidate, has been awarded Ludden Funds for presentation of "Stable isotope methodology to identify sources of fat in liver biopsy tissue from patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)," at the American Diabetes Association 64th Scientific Session in Orlando.
Molly Timlin, nutrition Ph.D. candidate, has been awarded Ludden Funds for presentation of "Study of fatty acid sources contributing to VLDL-Triglyceride (TG) postprandially using multiple stable isotopes," at the American Diabetes Association 64th Scientific Session in Orlando.
FScN Club's College Bowl Team won IFTSA's North Central Regional College Bowl Championship in April. The team will now compete for the College Bowl National Championship in Las Vegas in July. Team members include Alyssa Bakke, Deja Hendrickson, Rohit Kapoor (team captain), Avik Mukherjee, and alternate Deena Strohman.
Amanda Loge, MSW student, was awarded a 2004 Upper Midwest Human Rights Fellowship Grant sponsored by the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center. She will be doing an internship in Arequipa, Peru with Hogar de Cristo, a non-profit organization that serves children who work on the streets.
