 Strategic positioning recommendations President Bruininks issued his recommendations for the University's strategic positioning on May 6. Here is the recommendation for the Board of Regents action that pertains to CHE: Units in the current College of Human Ecology will be integrated as follows:
- Design, Housing, and Apparel will be integrated with the academic departments of the current College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture to create a new and expanded College of Design
- Food Science and Nutrition will be integrated into the new , expanded College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences (COAFES) with strengthened relationships with Public Health and/or the Medical School; and
- Family Social Science and the School of Social Work will be integrated with academic units of the current College of Education and Human Development and the current General College to create a new, expanded college dedicated to education, training, and human development across the lifespan. By July 1, 2006, the College of Human Ecology will cease to exist as an independent collegiate structure.
With approval of the Board, the Provost in consultation with the President will appoint task forces to design, plan, and implement these changes. Task force reports should be submitted no later than December 10, 2005. See the executive summary and full report

Whole grains conference FScN and the University are hosting "Whole Grains & Health: A Global Summit," May 18-20 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel Minneapolis. Participants will help develop a research agenda and action plan for including more whole grains in peoples’ diets. More information
New Buckman fellows The Buckman Fellowship in Leadership and Philanthropy program has selected its five fellows for the 2005-2006 cohort:
- Jeffrey Alexander '96, housing alumni. His project will focus on The University of Minnesota-Youth & AIDS Project
- Katalin Medvedev, DHA teaching assistant. Her project focuses on raising funds for the Karat Coalition, www.karat.org, which builds regional partnerships in post-Communist countries to develop a common human rights agenda for women.
- Dan Kennedy '99, nutrition alumni. He will work on the CHE Alumni Acquisition Committee to establish and sustain a Career Readiness Fund.
- Sara Zoff '02, M.S.W. Sara will collaborate with SSW to support M.S.W. students interested in exploring practice with older adults, building on the Hartford Foundation Gerorich Program.
- Maggi Davern '70 social work. Maggi will work with Minnesota's food shelves to help them sustain and grow their response to community needs.
E-scholarship grants awarded The eScholarship Committee has awarded funding to the following faculty for their proposals to promote student learning through eScholarship:
- Wayne Caron, FSoS, for the "Virtual Collaborative Learning Community"
- Barbara Martinson, James Boyd Brent, Carol Waldron and Ann Bender, DHA, for "How firm a foundation: an interactive learning site on design fundamentals"
- Seung-Eun Lee and Brad Hokanson, both DHA, for "Game on: Interactive games as an aid to learning."
CitySongs spring concert CitySongs will present "Celebrating Our Vibrant Community," its thirteenth annual spring concert, on Saturday, May 14, 4:30 p.m., Jeanne D’Arc Auditorium at the College of St. Catherine. The event is free and open to the public. More information
Mayan textile exhibit opens June 4 "Maya Textiles from the Guatemalan Highlands" opens at the Goldstein Museum June 4 and runs through September 17. This exhibition will feature clothing and textiles from the collection of Richard Nelson that communicate the history, religion, and philosophy of the Maya people, as well as 50 of Nelson’s photographs.

- Bill Doherty, FSoS, is quoted in the May 2 USA Today in the story, "Real runaway brides are rare, but inclination isn't"
- A research study led by Elizabeth Parks, FScN, has found that if you eat too many fatty foods, the fat can travel directly to your liver and damage it. The story ran in several newspapers.
- James Boyd-Brent, DHA, is quoted in the April 21 issue of the Minnesota Daily discussing the senior show currently on exhibit in the Goldstein.
- Ted Labuza, FScN, is quoted in the March 30 Minnesota Daily in a story about how several U.S. agencies are demanding stricter standards for safe water.
- Joanne Slavin, FScN, was on MPR April 28 discussing the fake food guide pyramid a Minneapolis couple created to mock the new recommendations put out by the USDA.
- Paul Rosenblatt, FSoS, is quoted in an April 24 Star Tribune story about funeral celebrations and storytelling sessions.
- Jodi Dworkin, FSoS, is quoted in the National On-Campus Report discussing how to ensure healthy and safe adolescent experimentation.
- Mark Umbreit, SSW, is mentioned in the April 22 Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, NY). He was the keynote speaker at a restorative justice conference sponsored by Roberts Wesleyan College.
- Bill Doherty, FSoS, is quoted in an April 16 Pioneer Press story about picking the right neighborhood for your family.
- Elizabeth Parks, FScN, is quoted in the April 12 Washington Post in a story on eating smaller meals.
- Esther Wattenberg, SSW, is quoted in the April 5 issue of the New York Times discussing the difficulties many Native American children and families are experiencing.
Selected faculty and staff highlights
- Hal Grotevant, FSoS, has recently been awarded over $1 million in funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Science Foundation. The grants fund the third wave of the Minnesota-Texas Adoption Research Project, which investigates how the degree of openness in the adoption arrangement affects the adopted children as young adults.
- Extension health and nutrition programs have transferred from the College of Human Ecology to Extension. Staff members Sue Letourneau, Mark Schultz, and Jeanne Laqua are now employees of Extension and will be moving to Coffey Hall.
- Sharon Danes, FSoS, along with Regional Extension Educators Lori Hendrickson, Becky Hagen-Jokela and Sara Croymans will receive the Excellence in Extension Award presented by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences at its annual conference in June. The award is for the workshop series "Financial Literacy: What’s New in Credit & Debt?"
- Sue Chu, DHA, has been selected for the Digital Media Center Faculty Fellowship program for 2005-2006. SHe will work on creating game-based learning modules for DHA design foundation courses.
- Dee Ginthner, DHA, has been named a Fellow of the Interior Design Educators Council
- Bill Angell, DHA, will cochair the Measurement and Mitigation Working Group of the World Health Organization’s International Radon Project.
- Jane Gilgun and Laura Abrams, both SSW, will be the keynote speakers at the International Resilience Project conference: Pathways to Resilience, June 15-17 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
- Mark Umbreit, SSW, has been selected to serve as the Boden Visiting Professor of Law at Marquette University during the 2005-2006 academic year. In this half-time position, he will teach two courses, give a keynote address, and collaborate on several research projects.

Graduate design student open house on May 9 Students in DHA 8114 Graduate Design Studio are holding an open house to share their work on Monday, May 9, 6:30-8:30 in 363 McNeal Hall. The work of Kate Bukoski, Carina Gardner, Peter Gaustad, Kristin Helle, Jennifer Hoeke, Beth Koch, Mary Wertz, Karen Ryan, Yuriy Sherayzen and Stephen Paul will be on display. Steven McCarthy is the instructor.
