International Education Week activities 
The college celebrates International Education Week, Nov. 15-19 with programs for undergraduate and graduate students interested in study/internship opportunities, and faculty who wish to internationalize what they do. Complete list of CHE and University-wide events

New MINCAVA grant 

The Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA) has been awarded $450,000 for Violence Against Women Online Resources (VAWOR), a collaborative project between MINCAVA and the U.S. Dept of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The co-principal investigators are Ann Kranz 
and Jeff Edleson. OVW has supported this project since 1997 with grants totaling over $2.5 million. Under the new grant, VAWOR will develop two new areas--an online learning module to train criminal justice professionals and advocates on culturally competent practice (a collaborative project with the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African-American Community), and an online peer review of new training and resource materials developed by other OVW Technical Assistance Providers.

Transgender Day of Remembrance activities 
MINCAVA is co-sponsoring Transgender Day of Remembrance activities to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. During the week of Nov. 15, a Memorial Wall in the Peters Hall atrium will display over 500 names and stories of people who were killed. On Nov. 19, the film, Boys Don't Cry will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in 39 Peters Hall. For more information, contact Yukiko Nakajima, ynakajim@che.umn.edu or 612-624-3059.

New employee orientation
CHE's orientation for employees new to the college since June 2002 is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 8 in 22 McNeal, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. This is an opportunity to meet the dean and other "newer" employees, and learn more about the college structure, governance, and initiatives; human ecology, departmental structure and program areas; and opportunities for involvement and service. Please RSVP by Wednesday, Dec. 1 to Jan Batt, jbatt@che.umn.edu .

World in Minnesota (WIM) events 
CHE is sponsoring a yearlong series of events celebrating the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. The series presents issues facing diverse families in Minnesota and throughout the world. An Oct. 6-7 event was about the Latino community; upcoming events are:

Faculty highlights

  • Jan Hogan, FSoS, has been appointed to the 31-member national USDA advisory board. The board provides consultation to the Secretary of Agriculture on national policies and priorities related to agriculture research, extension, education and economics. Read press release
  • A. Saari Csallany, FScN, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Budapest University of Technology in Budapest, Hungary, where she earned her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Csallany received the award in recognition of her scientific research.
