Welcome event on September 9
The annual College of Human Ecology Welcome Back event for faculty, staff, and students on Thursday, September 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the McNeal Hall atrium. Please join us for a free lunch served by the CHE deans and department heads, and the opportunity to mingle with students and colleagues. Voter registration information will also be available.

New Students
CHE welcomes 120 new freshmen and 240 undergraduate transfer students this year (100 from outside UM and 140 from inside). SSW welcomes 141 MSW and 5 Ph.D. students, and an additional 59 graduate students have joined FSoS, FScN, and DHA.

College assembly dates
College assemblies have been scheduled for Wednesday, November 3, 9-11 a.m., and Tuesday, April 5, 9-11. Mark your calendars!

New Campus Career Center
The St. Paul Campus Career Center opens later this fall in 198 McNeal Hall. The center will offer a full range of career services to undergraduates, graduate students and alumni from CHE, COAFES, and CNR. Sara Nagel Newberg has been appointed the interim director of the center and will report to Jerry Rinehart, associate vice provost for student affairs.

Mentor program accepting applications
The CHE Mentor Program matches undergraduate and graduate students with mentors in their desired field (120 students were matched last year). Student applications are due online by midnight September 15. More information

CHEAS to receive UMAA award
The College of Human Ecology Alumni Society will receive a Program Extraordinaire Award at the UMAA Volunteer Awards reception on Friday, September 10, for its outstanding work in developing career-readiness opportunities for students. To attend the reception, RSVP or learn more about the CHEAS mentor program and career readiness activities.

Campaign Human Ecology Update
As of the close of fiscal year 2003-04, Campaign Human Ecology has raised nearly $21 million--almost 80 percent of its $27 million goal. Giving to the college in 2003-04 totalled $2.4 milion, a 23 percent increase from the previous year. Leave and sabbatical deadlines
October 15, 2004 - P/A Staff Development Leave applications are due to department heads by October 15. Single Semester Leave and Sabbatical applications are due to heads by November 1.


World in Minnesota event
CHE's The World in Minnesota: Diverse Families, Shared Dreams program kicks off October 6-7. On Wednesday evening, October 6, guests will join in welcoming the Lila Bath collection of Mexican costumes to the Goldstein. A program on Thursday morning, October 7, features the consul general of the Mexican Consulate in Chicago who will discuss partnerships between CHE and higher education institutions from Mexico, and panels with community leaders and individuals from higher education. Mindy Kurzer, FScN, was quoted in a August 24 New York Times story about soy in the diet and its potential to relieve symptoms of menopause. Bill Doherty, FSoS, was quoted in an August 18 Orlando Sentinel story about divorce among older Americans. Doherty was also quoted in an August 12 Star Tribune story about the importance of family meals and an August 11 Californian story about children who are bored. Paul Rosenblatt, FSoS, was quoted in a Provo Daily Herald story about parents who have lost a child and decided to have another.

Jefferys releases report
Marcie Jefferys, SSW, has released "Working in Minnesota: Parents' employment and earnings in the childcare assistance program," a report of the Child Care Policy Research Partnership for the MN Department of Human Services. Read More

Dimock receives grant to help vet students
Peter Dimock, SSW, received a grant of $20,000 to assist the U's Vet Medical Center in developing a curriculum to teach vet students how to attend to the needs of pet owners--especially when delivering bad news. The grant comes from CENSHARE (Center to Study Human-Animal Relationship and Environments).

Students in the news


National champs

The Food Science and Nutrition College Bowl team won the national championship at the College Bowl competition during the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) annual meeting in Las Vegas. This is the second time in three years a University of Minnesota team has won, making it the university with the most wins. Team members were, Rohit Kapoor, Avik Mukherjeel, Deja Hendrickson and Ayssa Bakke. Deena Strohman was the alternate.

Scholarship recipients
Emily Benson, MSW student, received the 2004-2005 Consuelo W. Gosnell Scholarship from the National Association of Social Workers Foundation--awarded to master's students who are interested in working with American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino populations, or in public and voluntary nonprofit agency settings. Alison Jacobs, nutrition undergraduate, received the American Dietetic Association Foundation Mead Johnson Nutritionals /Bristol-Myers Squibb Scholarship, given for her excellent academic standing and promise of leadership.
